Covid-19

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Organizing Committee has decided to postpone the 7th International Symposium “Mediterranean Malvasias”. The organizers’ main concern is to guarantee the health of everyone involved and ensure a high level of attendance from scientists and professionals related to the Symposium topic around the world.

The 7th International Symposium “Mediterranean Malvasias” will be postponed to 2021 (date to be announced). This will affect the deadlines for full paper submission, review and registrations on which you will be timely informed through e-mail and our website.

On the positive note, authors will have more time to develop their ideas and perhaps analyze the data even further. We are looking forward to seeing you in Dubrovnik in 2021.

Invitation

Dear colleagues,

it is my honour and pleasure to invite you to VII. International Symposium “Mediterranean Malvasias”, which will be held in the Hotel “Sheraton” in Dubrovnik, from June 3-6, 2020.

Many varieties of Malvasia grapevines have been producing excellent wines throughout the Mediterranean for centuries, contributing to the distinctiveness of Mediterranean enogastronomy and the Mediterranean lifestyle in general.

For years, Malvasians have been intriguing the expert and scientific public with many unknowns - how many are there at all and are they related? By what “key” were the different varieties given the same or similar name? Where do they come from? What routes did they spread and how did they become one of the oldest and most famous wine brands in the world?

For this reason, since 2005, a symposium on “Mediterranean Malvasias” has been held in various Mediterranean countries, where the expert and scientific public is introduced to the latest research on grape and wine production, as well as the historical, cultural and social aspects of growing these varieties in the Mediterranean.

Even in Croatia, these varieties have important economic as well as historical and cultural significance. Thus, the Istrian Malvasia is the second most represented vine variety in Croatia, and Malvasia is a Dubrovnik variety of very rich history, whose name is mentioned in the 14th century and is still an important part of Dubrovnik’s cultural and natural heritage.

It is therefore a great pleasure for us to organize this gathering in Dubrovnik, a city of exceptional history, one of the symbols of the Mediterranean. Our goal is to bring together scientists and experts, producers, sommeliers and consumers, in short, all those who can contribute in many ways to improving our knowledge of these valuable varieties and wines. Plenary speakers at this event will be eminent scientists from different countries who will give an introduction to the latest insights and experiences with the “Malvasias” of different Mediterranean countries, and through other oral and poster announcements we expect the results of recent scientific, professional and promotional / marketing activities.

In addition, we have prepared interesting expert visits and events, which will bring you closer to the area of Dubrovnik and its wines.

I invite you to include this gathering in your calendars and, through your presence and active participation, contribute to the success of the Symposium, in order to deepen our existing and acquire new professional and scientific insights into the Malvasias of the Mediterranean.

Symposium President
Prof. dr. sc. Edi Maletić
